Intriguing and eclectic musical collage on third album from Devon-born, but now London-based singer-songwriter Rosie Lowe
Review
Devon-born, London-residing singer-songwriter Rosie Lowe came to prominence with her debut single ‘Right Thing’ in 2013, experimenting since with a variety of musical genres including jazz.
For her third, newly-released solo album, 'Lover, Other', co-produced with Harvey Grant and D’Monk, Lowe decided to pack her recording gear and take off to various locations including Berlin, Florence and Barcelona to create new work. The result is a mix of catchy, melodic songs with a splash of R&B, characterised by a subtle shift between moods, the leitmotif love in its many different complexions.
Highlights of this fifteen-track collection include: the choral opening track, ‘Sundown’, also bookending the album; the slow and sultry lead single ‘Mood To Make Love’; the trip hop dance track ‘In My Head’, accentuating Lowe’s husky vocals, a song which Lowe said was about “digging deep to a place inside where I forge on anyway, despite my fears”; the multi-textured, idiosyncratic ‘Berserk’ with its contrasting jazz and hip-hop sound; mellow, soul-inspired ‘There Goes The Light’; atmospheric, jazz-influenced ‘Something’ with its hypnotic beat; and the layered harmonies and a cappella-esque electronic balladry of ‘Don’t Go’.
Unconventionally recorded, inventive, with an engaging emotional directness, ‘Lover, Other’ is an intriguing, eclectic musical collage.
