Sparkling tunes from Shetland fiddle player Ross Couper and his band.
Review
Ross Couper, hailing from Shetland, has gained a reputation as one of the finest fiddle players on the UK folk circuit. His debut album ‘The Homeroad’ brings together a band of accomplished musicians performing a mixture of original and traditional tunes.
‘Da Clubb’ launches the album, impassioned fiddle backed by assertive piano, melodeon and drums. The haunting ‘Da Delting Bridal March’ is followed by the upbeat ‘Reels AF’, three spirited reels notable for exuberant piano playing.
The sweet and warm ‘Regenvista’ and the dense, swirling ‘Stoot’s Improvements’ showcase the strengths of all the band’s musicians. The album closes with ‘Sutherland’s’, a vibrant coda to a very enjoyable album.
Ross Couper is joined by Paul Jennings on drums, Sam Mabbett on melodeon, pianist Michael Biggins and special guest Duncan Lyall on bass. ‘The Homeroad’ is a lovely, lively debut album, promising great things to come for the Ross Couper Band.
