Swiss rock band Hillbilly Moon Explosion’s tenth studio album embraces influences ranging from rockabilly to reggae
Review
Hillbilly Moon Explosion is the musical project of vocalist Emanuela Hutter and bassist Oliver Baroni. Hailing from Switzerland, the duo explore many styles of music which coalesce to create a sound unique in its execution. ‘Back in Time’ is their tenth studio album and shows the maturity and flair formed by their long association.
The album opens with ‘Sometimes Late At Night’, which calls to mind the exuberant, clanging-guitar pop of the B52s. ‘Summerlove’, combines yearning vocals with slide guitar to create a beautiful torch song. ‘Knocked Down’ is a quirky rockabilly number, shot through with eerie backing vocals from Hutter.
‘Jet Fuel Rock and Roll’ is pure, stomping glam rock, and then the band veers into reggae territory with ‘Nothing Takes the Place of You’. ‘Reno’ changes the mood once again, a country music-influenced track lamenting a lost love: “The lights of Reno are still shining bright/With you forever in my heart tonight/Until the end, I’ll be forever going round/On the dancefloor of my memory”.
Other musicians on ‘Back in Time’ include Duncan James on lead guitar and drummer Sylvain Petite. Produced by Oliver Baroni, the album provides an entertaining listen, its variety of styles showcasing the impressive musical talents of Baroni and Hutter.
