Foo Fighters - But Here We Are

Label: Sony Music
Format: CD
Elegiac new album from the Foo Fighters, their first since the death last year of their drummer, Taylor Hawkins.

Review

'But Here We Are' is the first Foo Fighters album since the death last year of their drummer, Taylor Hawkins. So, perhaps inevitably, there is an elegiac air to the record with unambiguous lyrics and some mournful, plangent chord progressions haunted by a sense of loss. The death of Hawkins robbed the band of a major driving force and their singer/songwriter/lead guitarist and co-founder Dave Grohl felt he had lost “a true kindred spirit”. Many tracks on the new album reflect on this sadness. On the very moving 'Show Me How' Grohl duets with his 17 year-old daughter Violet (whose fine singing style is reminiscent of Phoebe Bridgers) to a backdrop of shimmering guitars. The title track has lyrics full of defiance and renewed resolve and will be a great song at live shows. 'The Teacher' and 'Rest' which close the album are also emotionally powerful. Producer Greg Kurstin (who worked on the last two Foos albums) has again made an impressive contribution. He has an admirably light touch, always allowing the Foos to be themselves whilst enhancing things with some neat decorative touches which always embellish the band's work rather than distract the listener. “But Here We Are” is a very professional, polished album - but emotionally strong, too.

One By One (2002)
Enjoyable fourth album from the Foo Fighters, which, while much of the energy of the band's previous three albums, has been given a new "sharper, rockier edge"
