Ambitious and verstaile debut solo album from promising Louisiana-based singer-songwriter Durand Jones
Review
Durand Jones has taken time away from his Indications bandmates to make his solo debut album, 'Wait Till I Get Over'.
It is a strong and ambitious record, ebullient and stunning with an impressive range of styles including some wonderful retro-soul as well as rootsy, Southern-style rock. Louisianan Jones's voice is rich, nimble and nuanced and can be ragged yet also smooth as silk, switching from huge power to a sweet croon in seconds.
The songs chosen for this new album are tailor-made to showcase Jones's exceptional vocal dexterity. Jones says the album was inspired by his humble upbringing in the small town of Hillaryville, alongside the Mississippi River in deepest Louisiana - founded in the late 1800s by eight former slaves. The music on the album is imbued with the musical traditions of his home town - and the title track is a remarkable and joyous song on which Jones skilfully replicates the “hymn lining”tradition, performing multiple parts with the resulting harmony sounding like a choir of distant voices. 'That Feeling' is another highlight, a song that is both spare and tender.
“Wait Till I Get Over” is a real find - a great piece of work by a hugely talented professional!
