In our column 'The Image That Made Me Weep', in which our writers write about the impact of a particular photo or image on them, Tommy Gunnarsson writes of a rare photo that finds Kraftwerk smiling.

Well, first of all, let me adjust that headline for a bit; I wouldn’t say that this image made me weep in any way. But it did make me feel very happy, which is a feeling as good as anything, if not the very best.
So, the image I have picked out is one of the German electro pioneers Kraftwerk, a band that has been synonymous with images of robots and mannequins ever since the mid-70s. Then suddenly, while reading David Buckley’s biography on the band, 'Publikation', I stumbled upon this photo, with all four members smiling to the camera, breaking down the stiff and robotic image in just a matter of seconds. I have later found another photo taken during the same session, with the members looking far more serious, so I guess the photo I found in the book is what you could call a “blooper” photo. But sometimes you get to know the real person or band while they think the world isn’t watching. And this is such a moment. Ralf, Florian, Wolfgang and Karl probably thought that this photo would never see the light of day. It did. And I’m happy it did.
