Nick Dent-Robinson profiles a new 50th anniversary deluxe version of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's 1971 hit album, 'Deja Vu'.
Article
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were, after Eric Clapton's Cream, probably the most impressive of the 1960s supergroups. They have now decided to reissue a 50th anniversary deluxe version of their 1970s hit album, 'Deja Vu'. This was a record that showcased the group's intricate, choral-like vocal arrangements as well as their sublime guitar interplay with memorable hooks from the four songwriting greats who were right at the top of their game.
This five-disc deluxe edition which costs from £62 (and is also available digitally) has some out-takes that do add to the original. Highlights include Graham Nash's 'Our House' - a portrait of domestic bliss inspired by the Lancastrian singer's life in LA's Laurel Canyon with then girlfriend Joni Mitchell. - Joni even duets on a previously unheard demo of the song. Stephen Stills's 'Carry On' is another fine track.
Although Stephen Stills, ever the perfectionist, has always claimed the album sessions were “worse than pulling teeth”, Graham Nash never shared that view and, certainly, throughout this fine album, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young sound like a band in perfect harmony.
