Outstanding and elegant debut by odd Berlin-based electro pop duo Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge
Review
Presumably these Modern Historical Floorings, die Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge, laid the basis for this album ‘The Big Prize’ during a post-Christmas holiday on the shore of the wonderful Lake Constance, in German der Bodensee. More Boden for you. They packed the room with archaic music devices and recorded the raw materials.
Fast forward to early 2020 and Niklas Wandt and Joshua Gottmanns find themselves in Vienna and smoothing the rough edges to a handful of digi-dub ditties with lyrics of surrealistic wit. At times Niklas and Joshua bicker like a married couple on holiday, thus singing on 'Ceramic and Conflict' lines that go "Your mummy (-corpse) is my pigment/The cutest ochre that I know," and similarly good-humoured nonsensical surrealism.
Most of the seven tracks are outstanding and elegant. Classy beats, tongue-in-cheek tunes plus an overall refined sound bring together one of the best debut albums of 2020. On vinyl it is at its warmest, of course.
