Young, loud and snotty punk harmonics on fourth album from genius Los Angeles noise rock duo No Age
Review
Using names which would not seem out of place on the title credits of a porn flick, Dean Spunt and Randy Randall produce a mighty spam o'noise. Only slightly delayed because of the pandemic, Los Angeles' No Age's second LP, CD ànd cassette for Chicago's Drag City Records, and the duo's fourth studio album, kicks off rejoicing with poppy punk fury on 'Sandalwood', which leads straight in to 'Feeler' - a catchy tune if there ever was one that US College FM radio shall treasure in the coming decades.
Recorded in the summer of 2019 at Ten 2 One Studios in Los Angeles, you can hear an eerie sea breeze resonance over loud sonic punk trash throughout the entire length of 'Goons Be Gone' which may lead you to believe that No Age fancy experimenting with a bit of jazz music, such as on 'Working Stiff Takes A Break'. Don't fret, however, as there is strumming punk mayhem next on 'War Dance' and then the sonic adventure of 'Toes In The Water'.
The LP's B-Side starts with a blinding apotheosis of the sonic punk pop that Sonic Youth and Sebadoh failed to reach. 'Turned To String' might be the track to bring No Age a certain kind of Nirvana fame. Genuine pranksters, No Age don't just follow a hammering tune, of which they've got plenty, with the next. Like on a radio show or a mix tape, No Age takes a different turn after each and every track. On 'Goons Be Gone' you get four absolutely thunderous indie rock number ones.
