Freewheeling jazz space rock on new album from the prolific Ivan the Tolerable and His Elastic Band
Review
The name of Ivan's Elastic Band rhymes with Plastic Band as much it does with Magic Band, and, guess what, you'll find a bit of both in the frenetic Elastic Band. Ivan, better known to his friends as Oli, recorded 'Rations' in studios around The UK, The NL and The USA with Kevin Nickles, Tom Carter and Holly Habstritt-Gaal. Oli Heffernan on bass, guitars, synths, organ and Mees Siderius on drums and percussion meanwhile make a perfect rhythm section.
Apparently ‘Rations’, according to its press release. is "Oli Heffernan's twentieth album in seven years as Ivan The Tolerable." 'On Eastern Island' and 'Bleached Venetian' both showcase Oli Heffernan and Kevin Nickles in a very fine Penguin Cafe Orchestra fashion. Indulging in loose swagger and sway, Oli and Kevin stroke the right drum skins. A bass player in his own right, Oli Heffernan grooves away on the even dreamier 'Empty Lantern' and 'Ex Hex' before saving the fast and furious for the last and returning with venom and vigour on 'Bitter Moon'. It is the blistering close to a mixed bag. At times blasting out with a blind fury, 'Rations' proves to be quite a groovy adventure. There is absolutely no harm done in playing this album loud, on repeat.
