Green Seagull - Scarlet/They Just Don't Know

Label: Mega Dodo
Format: 7"
Enjoyable new single from London psych-pop band Green Seagull which alternately soothes and swings

Review

Something in the smooth, guileless sound of the harmonies of late ‘60s pop keeps it sounding fresh, and it still works in a modern pastiche such as ‘Scarlet’. Here it’s blended with mellow acoustic guitar, a Beatles-que riff and some early Pink Floyd-like organ to create a little burst of Spring sunshine. More memorable and immediate is ‘They Just Don’t Know’, pushed along by Carlos Redondo’s crisp drumming. English roots are overlaid by Californian exuberance, the singing reminiscent of Crosby, Stills and Nash and the guitar a dream of Roger McGuinn. Some intricate ensemble breaks steer the song away from any blandness. It’s now on repeat in my head, where I’m quite happy for it to be. An album is due later this year; hopefully the strong influences apparent here won’t prevent the growth of Green Seagull’s own sound.
