Slow-growing but sublime new album from potential future leaders of the bleak wave, New Zealand-formed but now London-based duo A Dead Forest Index
Review
With the current success of Chelsea Wolfe, Savages and Marriages and Cigarettes after Sex this gothic, bleak wave of indie rock is seemingly bubbling away on the underground like the lava under a volcano which is ready to burst out into the world.
Settled in London now, this New Zealand duo transcend the norm with a ghostly feel thanks to the ethereal voice leant by guest vocalist Gemma Thompson. It’s a wondrous thing when the layered vocals overlap and when the melodies and hooks finally take hold.
But that is also the problem with 'In All That Drifts fom Summit'. It really does take many repeat listens to grab the listener so unless you are willing to persevere with it A Dead Forest Index may just get lost amongst all the black clothed hordes out there.
Tracks such as ‘Summit Down’ and ‘Homage Old’ give me the spine tingles with every listen now; it just took me a few weeks to get there. The end result is that this record is well worth your time.
