Shimmering pop on third album from Nebraskan band Mynabirds which fades on delivery
Review
‘Lovers Know’ is the new Mynabirds album, their third full-length release. The Nebraska band offers a glittering take on electric pop, led by vocalist Laura Burhenn, a dark-eyed chanteuse whose stare seems to seek the most private part of a listener.
Truth be told, I really admired the previous Mynabirds’ albums, in particular ‘What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood’ but that was before I became transfixed by the work of Lana Del Rey. Of course, comparisons like these, the perspective changers that result don’t seem quite fair to enact. They are, after all, separate artists.
What Burhenn does to surround her gorgeous sound is her own architecture. It’s just that Del Rey really takes the futuristic musical twists overlaid with the concept of otherworldly sexuality to a special level. Suddenly everything else that rises beneath that surface loses in the process. The Mynabirds still craft a credible record (songs like ‘Semantics’, for example). Their reach is far more conventional and perhaps even marketable than their influences. This isn’t inspiring the same heart flutters, and I’m turning over to something else in my mind before I’m even done here.
