Freeze Puppy - The Night Attendant

Label: Pickled Egg
Format: CD
Elegant and gorgeous combination of chamber music and pop on fourth album from Freeze Puppy, the project of composer Tom Wilson

Review

Quintessentially English and combining sophisticated chamber music with mid -1970's pop, fine minimalism and a small element of classical music, 'The Night Attendant' is more than just a CD for insomniacs. Its upbeat melodies and introspective composition blend well with Freeze Puppy's words of reflection. On 'Saturated Foods', Freeze Puppy mocks the lifestyles of the diet generation: "Punishing my constitution...They're going to be the death of me." 'Katama Bay' follows a neat cosmopolitan change with a sarcastic touch in the words. Lovely back-up vocals on 'Living in the Movies' help out Tom Wilson whose voice isn't always as good as it could be. His vocals drown in the great brass arrangements he wrote for himself. He's at his best on 'Father Maneaux' where he sings with calm but firm affection. The album's greatest quality lies in the way it merges its quiet charm with moments of louder frankness.
