Superb fourth album from Californian-based garage rock/psychedelic band, the Loons
Review
'Inside Out of Your Mind' is the fourth album from California's the Loons, whom recently played at the Easter Psych/Mod Festival at the 229 Club in London. The Loons know their 1960's music and show it well on this album.
It begins with 'Siren City', which is a bopper and sounds like a tighter, garage-influenced version of the B-52's. 'Moon and Tide' starts off like Arthur Lee's Love, but has more textures and is full of harmonies and cool grooves.
'Inside Out Your Mind' is choppier, sounding very much an early 1980's Paisley Underground number. 'Out of the Frame' is Merseybeat-flavoured, but has a stronger rhythm and riffs.
'Cruel Grey Fog' is grittier, recalling early 60s R'n'B bands such as the Yardbirds. 'Silence' is acoustic-based and reflective with vocalist Mike Stax sounding on it like a young Mick Jagger.
'My Desolation' is a light psychedelic R'n'B track in the style of the Seeds. 'I Don't Live Here Anymore' is fast-paced and exciting, like the Who at their most angry and bitter.
'Head in the Clouds' is flower power-edged, while 'Transparent Eyes' combines early 60s R'n'B sounds with a dash of psychedelia. 'As The Raven Flies' recollects a pissed-off John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, and becomes more complex and wonderful as it progresses.
A fine and varied album of 1960's vibes and psychedelic eccentricity.
