Unpredictable fourth album from fiery Italian stoner rock three-piece, Black Rainbows
Review
I mean holy smokes. This band is called Black Rainbows, the album; ‘Hawkdope’. The front cover shows a hawk flying through space gripping onto a skull that is bellowing out smoke and the record label, well, that’s Heavy Psych Sounds. I wonder what sort of music this could be? Said no one. Ever.
So far so predictable, right?
NOPE.
This rips. I absolutely love it. I tell you something if these guys were from North America and not Rome they would be absolutely massive right now. They have the technical chops of, say, Earthless but the singing brings the whole thing into an overall fresher direction than those guys. It reminds me of a more straightforward Kadavar in places. The guitars are always set to fuzz and the attitude is always tipping blissed out fun. Some records simply rock and this is one of those.
‘Wolf Eyes’ is a stomper that reminds me of Mudhoney in places, full of pounding drums and headbanging riffs whilst ‘Hypnotize My Soul with Rock ‘n’Roll’ and ‘Killer Killer Fuzz’ are both the perfect remedy for those that were gutted that the most recent Fu Manchu record failed to deliver the stoner rock goods they promised.
Black Rainbows aren’t reinventing the wheel, They are more likely to set it on fire and smoke it to be honest, but sometimes you need to just rock out and if that was the mission with ‘Hawkdope’ then consider it accomplished. And then some.
