Exceptional new EP from much acclaimed Glaswegian hip hop act Hector Bizerk upon which they reflect darkly on their native city
Review
The experimental hip hop act Hector Bizerk have through persistent touring and a series of excellent releases, particularly with the shortlisted 2013 Scottish Album of the Year ,'Nobody Seen Nothing', won much acclaim over the last couple of years.
They return with the second in a series of 3 EPs, all with a Glasgow theme that encompasses a darker side of the dear green place. This release is not just a musical one, but also includes a well-made short film, art from long-term friend and artist Pearl Kinnear and a poetry lesson from Glaswegian writer Liz Lochhead.
After an acoustic led opener ‘Pearl Pictures’, the soundscape then veers towards a trippy electro vibe in 'People Make Glasgow' which touches on the darker side of the historic slave trade of old Glasgow that no one seems to want to talk of. Louie takes certainly tackles this subject head on, recalling a shameful event in the history of the old empire which really should not be ignored.
Liz Lochhead joins the band for 'Trouble is not a Place' , while closing track ‘Eton Mess’ takes a depressing look at post-referendum blues and the heartfelt disappointment of a missed opportunity.
This is another exceptional release from the always groundbreaking Hector Bizerk
