Owl and Mouse - Somewhere to Go

Label: Fika Recordings
Format: 7"
Impresisve indiepop on vinyl only EP from ukulele-playing Australian group Owl and Mouse, who draw likenesses with Allo Darlin'

Review

I thought there was something fishy about this record. The opening track, 'Don & Anna', sounds exactly like the rather special Allo Darlin' with its gentle female vocals and ukulele driven music, and the artwork style looks familiar too. It was only on further investigation that I discovered that it wasn’t Elizabeth Morris and her cohorts recording under a different moniker, but in fact fellow Australian singer songwriter Hannah Botting (who just happens to be Allo Darlin' bassist Bill Botting’s sister!), Tom Wade on bass, Emma Winston on keyboards and sister Jen Botting on backing vocals. Paul Rains, the guitarist in Allo Darlin' provided the artwork...Despite the likeness to Allo Darlin' (which is no bad thing), Owl & Mouse put their own stamp on the songs, with harsher lyrics – “Once you have come then I am useless” - and even allow Tom to sing lead on 'Western Skies'. All in all an impressive EP. Allo Darlin' had best hurry up with their third LP or Owl & Mouse may just steal their crown.
