Rootsy Americana recorded in Nashville and Chichester on fourth album from singer-songwriter, Deborah Bonham

Review

A rootsy Americana album recorded in Nashville and Chichester during a highly charged emotional time, this latest release reaffirms Deborah Bonham's huge talent - and real soul. Deborah Bonham has long been recognised across the music industry as a major talent – like her late brother John Bonham, Led Zeppelin's drummer and his son Jason. But with Spirit Deborah demonstrates her genuine soul too. Her love of artists like Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt,Lowell George has influenced her writing and performance to the point where Deborah now deserves to be considered in that same stratospheric league. Drawing on the pain, joy and anger that life brings to all of us, Deborah communicates with immense power and sensitivity. Yet there's always an underlying optimism and positivity...that's the “spirit” which inspires the album's title. Co-produced with Glenn Skinner and mixed in Nashville by Mike Poole, Spirit features Marco Giovino (Robert Plant's Band of Joy, Norah Jones, John Cale) on drums plus pedal steel supremo BJ Cole as well as Robert Plant on harmonica. The other musicians are her regular – stunning - band including bassist Ian Rowley, keyboardist Gerard Louis and guitarist Peter Bullick whose virtuosity throughout this album is really impressive. Drummer Richard Newman (Steve Marriott, Sam Brown, Rory Gallagher) joins Deborah on her live dates. Through the album's twelve tracks there are some cajun influences – as in 'What It Feels', some echoes of Christine McVie – in 'Lay Me Down' and of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers plus the Eagles and the Byrds elsewhere. And cello, mandolin and dobra are used to brilliant effect in 'Fly'. Throughout Deborah's band demonstrate a real affinity with her words, skilfully absorbing and then reflecting her emotions, sometimes soft, other times fierce. 'Take Me Down', the first single from 'Spirit', received great reviews in the USA and the UK and early reaction to the album has been similarly enthusiastic - deservedly so!
