Perfect stoner rock on exceptional mini-album from Rome-based group, Black Rainbows

Review

I know journalism is meant to be subjective and unbiased, but to be honest I don’t care. Over the last year or so I’ve really got into psych rock, stoner rock or whatever you may want to call it, and when I slammed Black Rainbows new six-song mini album ‘Holy Moon’ into my CD player I was instantly pleased. Low, huge and skyscraping riffs on the opening title track set the precedent for the rest of the album. ‘Monster of the Highway’ doesn’t go too slowly along either, giving the album some great depth rather than sounding like an exercise in patience and how long someone can make a song go on for. They cut to the chase on this, but without losing any of their sound. ‘Chakra Temple’, takes the listener on a distortion-driven journey through the outer realms of the mind. It is complete bliss and loud as hell. While ‘Chakra Temple’ has one reaching for the incense sticks, ‘The Hunter’ has you reaching right for the beer in the fridge. It is definitely more in the ‘rock out’ than ‘wig out’ vibe. Black Rainbows, who are based in Rome, Italy, would sound very appealing to those who like Kyuss, Red Fang, Fu-Manchu and Electric Wizard. While most of the songs clock in well over the 5 minute mark they’ve also managed to completely trim the fat, not always easy to do within this style of playing. Finished off with a desert-tastic cover of MC5’s ‘Black to Comm’, these Italian chaps have made a perfect record.
