Kingston to Shoreditch is not on the crossrail journey yet, but dubstep ahead of its time brings us this rather quiet and intrinsic excursion. 'Sea of Trees' with its touch of West African xylophone is a melodic, yes, even vocal track. We are still talking Studio Rockers here. The ingenious rhythm pattern set against the angelic vocals provides a nice contrast. Dance floor excitement, which used to be Studio Rockers' main theme, comes in on the glorious 'Don't Stop' - on the scale of Benga's 'Night' it gets 9½/10. While addictive footwork music, it is of the type that makes for gentle and persistent shuffling. It is simple and effective, ànd affective. 'A Perfect Yellow' begins with sketches of dreamy psychedelia, before lashing out with wonderful jazz vibes. Eerie analog effects give 'A Perfect Yellow' the feel of 1970's soul music. Minimal jazz, richly entangled in harp sounds, rounds off this pleasant disorientating EP with 'Nightshade'. Well worth getting, the EP is a great listen whilst 'Don't Stop' probably ranks along this year's best dance tracks.
