First-rate 10 inch vinyl only debut EP from highly promising London-based post punk/alt-folk act, Former Utopia

Review

Impressively recorded live over the space of one day in Former Utopia's rehearsal room,'Colapsar' provides a glimpse in an extremely promising new act. Varying between post-punk and alt-folk, there is a gorgeous simplicity on display within ‘Colapsar’. It echoes of the classic sound of indie/underground music. There is something about their sound that resonates with an honesty and integrity which is so lacking in this day and age. ‘Schism’ is a classic anti-love song which reflects a very realistic approach to love, rather than having the sound of a love-lorn crooner that only thick people would try and relate to. You feel the angst and passion from guitarist/vocalist George. The subtly driving bass line of ‘Blue Fugue' gives a vibe that’s lies somewhere between Fugazi and a toned-down Stranglers, and breaks into a patiently frantic chorus that reeks in the best possible way of all the US post-hardcore greats. There is even a vague hint of the less accessible side of Blur. Personally I try to stay away from EPs as they often seem to be a glorified demo or the work of a band not ambitious enough to strive to make a full length album. Former Utopia, however, have gifted us with something quite special here. The fact that this was recorded in one day just gives it a certain magic to it. It is like these songs needed to get out there, as the six tracks of 'Colapsar' work so well together. ‘Double Negative’ acts a fantastic climax to the “regular” tracks (Track 6 being a download only cover of Kath Bloom's ‘Come Here’), as it is by far the loudest and raucous offering. The band manage this intensity so well, resulting in a really edgy song which is as unnerving as it is exciting and it captures the live sound of a band flawlessly. Former Utopia are a band that indie music is going to be hearing a lot more of.
