Review

Four remixes of tracks by the Sone Institute have been made available as a download. First it's Dollboy's musical tuning, behind which 'Jerusalem' is recited quietly in the background. This seamlessly develops into a spooky guitar composition, as if coming from an indie abbey. His playful de-compositioning throws in exotic and homemade effects Nick Rundall's tender remix of 'Tradition & Dream' brings in lounging post hippie loveliness, and has a rather suspicious Christmas muzak touch. There are plenty of gloomy atmospherics next, from the too appropriately named the Doomed Bird of Providence who stretch 'Struck by a Rock' into a nearly drone-like soundscape. Today's master of tension in folktronica, Kemper Norton, reworks 'World is Still a Confusion'. Now a mistful whirlpool of abstract patterns, the track evokes a sense of majestic greyness, with haunting vapours of sound that whizz by like comets in a universe.
