Jenny O - Home

Label: Manimal Vinyl
Format: CDS
Understated, but immensely enjoyable debut EP from Long Island-based singer-songwriter, Jenny O

Review

I love the opening track to this EP. This album has a rolling bassline, vague nods to psychedelica, a ragged guitar solo, a noodly breakdown and a cracking chorus. There’s taste and skill at work here. I listened to this short EP for the first time while doing the ironing. I hadn’t, at that time, troubled myself to find out anything more about Jenny O than her name. But, by the end of the first track I was hooked. The other four songs on this album are much more low key. Two acoustic songs (one a ballad, one a mid-tempo ditty) and two solo piano songs, the latter with chords lifted from Let It Be. Each has a sharp melody, nicely delivered in a slightly crumpled style. The kind of music that sounds easy, but – of course – not many people do well. You may recognise Jenny O’s voice – she has sung with Chris Garneau, J Tillman and Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy – but this EP suggests that her own songs should get most of her attention from now on. An album is imminent, apparently, and ‘Home’ whets the appetite for that nicely.
