Melancholic and brooding, but ultimately uplifting second album from She Makes War, the project of former Miss Black America member Laura Kidd
Review
I first came across Laura Kidd back in 2006 when she joined Miss Black America briefly. Interviewing the band, she came across as someone with drive and a lot to say for herself, so it’s no surprise that her solo project, She Makes War, is still going strong, and that she’s been making a name for herself as a session musician/singer.
‘Little Battles’ is her second album, which she describes as “gloom pop” and sure enough much of it does sound sad, but with an underlying strength and vitality that belies the so called gloom. This album is atmospheric and brooding, offset by Kidd’s vocals and utilising a multitude of instruments, including recorders and ukulele.
