Beautiful-sounding, but unchallenging retro country rock on third album from Ohio-based band, Buffalo Killers
Review
This release – unsurprisingly – is the third album from the reliable Buffalo Killers.
As ever their country-blues-rock is beautifully put together
Stand out track 'Spend My Last Breath' could be an exemplar of how to write a swirling, summer love song. With a band always inclined towards the retro, and this album could measure among the standards of country-rock from just about any era, with a nod towards the timeless and wistful.
But '3' is rather one-paced compared to previous outings from the Buffalo Killers. The vocals drift languorously over the guitar work and, taken individually, the songs here don't fail. But as 'Huma Bird' gives way to 'Lily of the Valley' and to 'Move On' it can be hard when thinking back later to separate them in your mind. Only 'Circle Day' really gets its stomp on and steps up a gear.
It's a easy going ride, and it's a pleasant cruise to take. Sometimes it would nice to go a little faster and take a more challenging road with the Buffalo Killers.
