Imaginative debut album from Leeds-based art rock five-piece, the Trumpets of Death
Review
In defiance of generally accepted logic, the Trumpets of Death blow their horn as if there's no end to setting up fights between tin soldiers and tin angels. Be it terribly clever art rock or jazzy klezmer, the combined forces of this Leeds quintet knows no limits.
Five very diverse tracks are on offer here. 'The Press Gang' starts out sounding as if Fleet Street is finally getting the flushing it fully deserves. Next 'The Paper Plough' offers unsolicitated consolence and before you know it, you'll be dancing to more arty farty klezmer euphoria, accompanied by waltzing indie rockers.
The turn comes on 'Jason', without his Argonauts now. Dragging its feet as if feeling pleasantly disturbed, the Trumpets of Death build a wall from guitars and trumpets alike. Mesmerizing and noisy memorabilia gets the upper hand on 'Woodrows Lament' just before 'Cruel Ships' Captain' introduces a full blown brass arrangement. That closing track brings down the Walls of Jericho by dwelling in messy and jazzy antics.
