Click Five - TCV

Label: Lojinx
Format: CD
Underwhelming and repetitive indie rock on third album from Boston-based band, the Click Five

Review

You know that thing where a band writes a song, and a word in the song title ends in ING, but instead of writing it, they end the word at N and put an apostrophe after it? Yeah, well I’ve just found the band that has ruined that for all current and future songwriters. The Click Five think that it’s all right to inexplicably use that in THREE song titles on this one single album. And it’s on three consecutive songs, no less. Tracks 2 through 4, 'Fever For Shakin’', 'Dancin' After Midnight' and the morosely titled 'The World Comes Crawlin’ Back'. That last one is the most inappropriate use of the dropped G I have ever encountered, and I can only assume their keyboard was missing one when typing this press release. I am actually familiar with the Click Five, even though said press release bizarrely tries to convince me that I’ve never heard of them (top tip – when trying to sell a band, try not to make them sound totally shit in the first few lines). They supported McFly way back when, and I remember being distinctly underwhelmed. Given 6 years and an apparent change of line up, I’m happy to report that very little has changed. I had managed to listen to the entire album without realising that the track had changed more than three times, which is a damming indictment of just how repetitive their rhythms are. Everything has a slightly surf-pop undertone which in itself is not necessarily bad, but it’s just huge overkill. 'Back To You' beats you over the head with it, as if it’s desperately trying to tell you “WE ARE REMINISCENT OF THE BEACH BOYS” without actually, you know, being reminiscent of the Beach Boys at all. The opening of 'Fever For Shakin’' is actually quite good. But for some reason they ruin a potentially bluesy pop song with a psychedelic 60's Austin Powers-style backing track and the result is confused. The chorus is halfway decent, and with more work it could be a radio-friendly hit. Well, be honest – any of these could be a radio-friendly hit because music doesn’t have to be good to be on the radio. What I mean is, it could stand up against some more established radio acts. I think. The Click Five are old fashioned, and that’s their problem. They are WAY too late to the emo-party, and are immediately eclipsed by bands like Panic At The Disco, who have mastered the use of dance-synth, guitars and meaningful lyrics. They aren’t even as modern as McFly, who are probably one of the oldest boybands still performing successfully. They are from a dark time at the turn of the millennium, post-Backstreet Boys and pre-Busted, when we were all so confused with what to call the upcoming decade that we didn’t notice any music being released. If this is your first CD, I’d say go for it. You have nothing to lose, and you can always look back and think, “oh my gosh, what was I thinking?” If you are, however, someone who has heard other music before, there’s nothing for you here.
