Sidi Toure - Sahel Folk

Label: Thrill Jockey
Format: CD
Rich collection of Mali traditional folk songs from leading local musician, Sidi Touré

Review

Relaxed rebel rouser that he is, Mali's Sidi Touré broke away from family tradition and chose instead to lead the life of a musician. For the collection of 'Sahel Folk' classics, Sidi Touré recorded nine songs which in total only took 18 takes. Assuming that these traditionals needed no further explanation, the agreement was that with each, one extra take would suffice. 'Sahel Folk' therefore became a highly concised 'best of' album. The desert blues music on 'Sahel Folk' sounds pristine, recorded with awkward directness. Ultimately this album, however, is a cache of pure West-African storytelling, using as well snares. The 'guitars' have literally a dozen or more snares. The traditional aspect set apart, 'Sahel Folk' brings great insight to the sound, settings and atmosphere of Mali desert blues music. The album echoes a rich heritage.
