Rich and moving new single from visceral London-based singer-songwriter, John McKeown
Review
Taken from this singer-songwriter’s debut album, ‘When You’re Real’, the single ‘Candy Girl’ thrusts us into visceral terrain courtesy of John McKeown’s pure-grain voice and an acoustic rollicking organic drone
“See the cracks begin to show,” he sings, no holds barred. McKeown says, “by the time you’ve reached your 40s you find a level of communication within yourself that doesn’t have to be cynical or world-weary, but that still has something useful to say.”
He co-founded and fronted Hero which supported the Stereophonics on a month long European tour. But, since 2008 this mid-aged, and proud of it, maverick has gone solo.
‘Candy Girl’ is rich and honestly moving. But, like experiencing anything sweet and satisfying, you’ll be licking your chops for more.
