The Strange Boys debut. 'the Strange Boys and Girls Club', was not released that long ago, yet now we have the follow-up already. 'Be Brave' proudly fits the shoes of its predecessor. They're a quite young bunch from Austin, TX, yet they've matured twisting garage rock in such a sense that Roky Erickson doesn't need to bother about a next album. Singer Ryan Sambol's voice sounds genuinely heartbroken, the best example being 'Friday in Paris', and he's accompanied by three very competent musicians, with surprise saxophone player Jenna Thornhill-DeWitt tearing the roof down on the title track which is released also as a single on Rough Trade in The UK.
Strange Boys brew an intoxicating cocktail of sixties punk tunes and bluesy ballads that are drenched in rumbling echoing sounds. 'Be Brave' stands testament to a heritage of tantilizingly tender trash as it guides you through moments of fragile angst and stomping bewilderment.
As was the case on their debut, there's not a single daft track on offer here. 'Be Brave' not only shows the Strange Boys's songwriting talent. The album too hints at a forlorn quality in its music and has a gutsy twang, without anyone in the band in particular dominating. 'Be Brave' lives up to what it tells.
