Attention-grabbing wacky sixties-influenced punk pop on second album from Austin, Texas-based duo, Harlem
Review
Harlem's Afro-American population is no longer in the majority in that part of Manhattan. Hippies flocked to the place and at one stage it was rumoured to be the next Brooklyn. All of these contemplations are course entirely useless as the duo of Coomers and Curtis O'Mara Harlem, while playing slightly wacky hippy sixties punkpop, come from Austin, Texas, or so it says on the Matador hypesheet. Apparently, the duo, therefore, is not from Harlem or Brooklyn.
'Harlem' can be described as pleasently and pleasingly deranged. Street anxiety, troubled lust and pneumonia; he got drunk and she got stoned are all themes on this album and one way or the other the 'Hippies' album comes as might be expected from such an oddball twosome, in both name and performance.
Sleazy twisted shake, rattle and roll sets the pace, yet it is the text message type of lyrics which sets the tone for this. 'Hippies' both begs for attention as well as for recognition. It's a set of catchy tunes, even streamlined in spite of all its hasty stonk attitude. Under-produced yet the basement garage feel to 'Hippies' is just a tarnish. You can shake your hips to it, sing along or sip on one beer too many. This is Harlem's second album and made me anxious to hear the debut! It would be safe to book these two guys, two guys are much cheaper.
