Terri Tarantula - Terri Tarantula

Label: Skok Records
Format: CD
Atmospheric and dark-sounding debut album from Terri Tarantula, the new solo project of Terri Moellers, the drummer with the Walkabouts and ex-front woman with the Transmissionary Six

Review

Terri Moeller is drummer for the Walkabouts and was half of creative core of The Transmissionary Six. She has now turned out a solo album under the name Terri Tarantula with some help from other Seattle musos, including her husband and Transmissionary Six partner Paul Austin. Her self-titled debut is a slow-moving, melancholy work with many of the country touches that flourished in her other bands’ work. Moeller’s laconic vocals set the pace for most of the songs, starting with the ‘Shaker Star’, with every word emphasized over a bed of tremelo guitar. A sleepy mood envelopes the delicate piano work and distant call-and-response chorus of ‘Your Small Hands’, with Moeller’s vocals taking on a gentler cast. The pace picks up a little on ‘Upside Down’ and ‘Bag of Bricks’, each with its own relatively bouncy rhythm track. Otherwise, this is the album to throw on if you’re in the mood for something in the vein of The Cowboy Junkies, Mazzy Star or Blackavar: Uncluttered, atmospheric music with dark undertow.
