Charlie Alex March - Home/Hidden

Label: Loaf Recordings
Format: CD
Entertaining debut album from experimetal electronic musician Charlie Alex March, which, while seemingly subdued, needs to be played loud

Review

Charlie Alex March's seemingly intellectual muzak borrows tricks from the likes of Max Richter on the typewriter track 'Mao', yet anyone asking Stereolab's drummer Andy Ramsay for assistance is okay in my book. 'Home / Hidden' sets out to provide the perfect afternoon tea soundtrack, but sounds more like a liquid lunch with a healthy salad to me. The strings are rather rough and edgy and the riffs on the moog plus the keynotes on the piano can hardly be called subtle either, even when the entire orchestration and arrangement for 'Home / Hidden' is meant to please tender and fragile eardrums. Play loud in a pub, not in some gentrified cappuccino bar. 'Kyoko's Broken Piano' and 'Lost Levels' could be perfect detective series music. There's so much namedropping in the press release that it seems highly suspicious that there might be a grand, sarcastic twist behind 'Home / Hidden'. 'Home/Hidden' is, however, very entertaining. Pour me another if you will.
