Enjoyable latest album of melodic pop from British songwriter and producer, Paul Curreri
Review
Despite having a long-running recording career of his own, Paul Curreri is probably best known now as the husband of Devon Sproule, whose most recent album ‘!Don’t Hurry For Heaven!’ (which he recorded) drew wide praise in folk/country circles.
That’s nothing to be ashamed of, and – besides - Curreri probably spends as much time working as a producer as he does being a performer, having twiddled the knobs on six albums released last year.
His own effort, ‘California’ popped up onto the shelves of UK record shops in the final month of 2009, and will be released in the US in March. It has proven to be a delightful little slow-burner in the winter months.
Having sustained a vocal chord injury at the end of his last tour, Curreri was forced to rest up and wait. Despite this predicament, he seems to have emerged in a happier place, with the opening track cheerfully explaining how he wants to move on and ‘make memories’. It’s a far cry from the far more muted tones of 2007’s ‘The Velvet Rut’.
Curreri’s qualities are those you would hope for in a good singer-songwriter; a powerful voice, a range of melodic styles and ambitious, dextrous guitar playing. Add to that, an engaging live show and (another) enjoyable set of songs, and we have a winner.
