Short and fast, but excellent debut album from San Francisco indie punks Brilliant Colors, who recall classic female-led acts such as Siouxsie and the Banshees and Blondie
Review
Hey, this is alright. It was good to be taken back with it to a proper bit of female led punk.
The only negative comment I give is that it is too short. I put it on for the first time and almost immediately it seemed that it had ended.
It is a 10 track CD that lasts 24 minutes. That’s blooming quick. Even for 7 inch pop it’s quick. Then I worked out why it went by so fast. The tracks are energetic with brassy punk guitar and chippy drums. While this San Francisco lot are essentially an educated punk band, they also have indie layers. I would go as far as saying that they have got a bit of their drive from the early Jam on a couple of the tracks. They definitely have a bit of Siouxsie and the Banshees/Blondie in their sound and a lot of that particular style of guitar-led work that had the Undertones causing chaos at the youth club disco. This music is for a following who have enough energy to go bonkers for the length of each track, then the next and next until the lights go on and everyone has to go home.
The lead vocals and guitar by Jess Scott are well delivered , I bet they are a cracking outfit to see live - if you can cope with being thrown all over by the ‘young people’ enjoying the music. This is the sort of band that will develop a loyal following and they have their own sound and style in enough proportions to merit it .
I would even be so bold as to say that I would go and see them play, but would go no where near the main crowd as they will have far too much energy and be far too sweaty for me to be near…
