Delicate Americana on striking second album from Texan-based project, Ola Podrida
Review
A slight variation on the name for the popular stew "olla podrida", Ola Podrida's second album has a tasty Americana flavour.
'Belly Of The Lion' is a well dosed set of relaxed honky tonk and upright country folk tunes. It follows on from David Wingo's surprisingly matured debut as Ola Podrida in 2007. Wingo's voice has the calm and composure to match the gentle tickle and twang of the music.
Recorded at home with just drummer Matthew Frank on four tracks, 'Belly Of The Lion' shows a craftsman whose rather delicate songs have a marvellous flow. These are epic soundtracks to the broad horizons of America, the head cinema of immaculate imagery, and make you long for an evening on a veranda.
A balladeer with a gift for striking arrangements is seldom heard but 'Belly Of The Lion' portrays one.
