Witty and durable psychedelic and country-influenced Britpop on debut album from Edmonton, Alberta-based group, Hot Panda
Review
This tongue-in-cheek psychedelic country Britpop, recorded in Winnipeg, "a frozen shithole" in the words of Venetian Snares, proves witty, warm and lasting, however carefree and bubblegummy Hot Panda at first may appear. I cannot help believing the Liverpool bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s, however, also bore a big influence on Hot Panda. The kids in thìs band though only took that inspiration and not took those drugs.
The guitar driven melodies and hooks appear with catchy little choruses and moments of euphoria, yet they never sound too eager to please. Most of 'Volcano ... Bloody Volcano' is built around merrily pumping basslines and nifty organ riffs. In a perfectly ordered society, Hot Panda would have a couple of tracks culled off this album scraping the bottom end of the charts. You will find plenty of lasting party material on this modest disc.
