Consistently inventive and atmospheric debut album from London-based duo Joe Gideon and the Shark, which captures all the energy and power of their live shows
Review
For anyone who has seen Joe Gideon and The Shark live this album will have been highly anticipated. The two EPa they released wet the appetite and give an idea of how their music would translate to the stereo, but the album demonstrates the full force of their sound.
Opening track ‘Harum Scarum’ introduces the duo’s dark pounding rhythms and eases the listener in. ‘Civilization’ then builds the tension further. Lead vocalist Joe Gideon weaves a story about growing up and discovering the world. Organ and keyboard played by multi-instrumentalist Viva aka The Shark add a hit of energy reminiscent of a gospel choir.
‘DOL’ is one of the stand out tracks on a consistent album that doesn’t have any disappointing songs. Gideon manages to create an eerie atmosphere with his story telling lyrics and brings a dark sense of humour to each track.
‘Anything You Love That Much You Will See Again’ changes the pace of the album with delicate piano notes accompanying lyrics about a lost love returning.
The debut album from the Gideon siblings has managed to capture everything that is great about their live shows. With an upcoming UK tour the band is kicking off 2009 with everything to play for.
