Peter Bruntnell - Peter and the Murder of Crows

Label: Loose Music
Format: CD
Fine Americana on latest album from English singer-songwriter, Peter Brunntnell

Review

Peter Bruntnell was the support to the American Music Club on their recent tour and ‘The Murder of Crows’ is a fine album of cool Americana from this Englishman. ‘False Start’ is wholesome Americana, which takes Nick Drake’s magic and updates it. ‘Domestico’ is especially strong material, sounding like the best of McCartney. ‘John’ shows masterful craftmanship and delivery. ‘Clothes of Winter Warm’ has husky vocals and a great back room folk vibe. ‘Cold Water Swimmer’ is classy songwriting material, with a ‘Revolver/Sgt Peppers’ groove and a decent contemporary vocal. ‘Devil's Good Sun’ has elegant cello and bass and again sounds like a Nick Drake number.‘Lowlife’ is a soul searching number based around piano and organ.‘Hash Dream Craving’ is very fast and joyous, almost a hymn until the end when it becomes more psychedelic. ‘Sea of Japan’ is stripped down and minimal, a bit like Babyshambles but far superior and without the mockney. ‘Bluebeard’ closes this fine album with some high class song writing.
