Dynamic, frequently surprising debut mini album from the Chicago-based Anni Rossi, who stands out in the current pack of young singer-songwriters
Review
Just when you thought that the well of young singer-songwriters had run dry, here comes another.
Anni Rossi here offers a six track mini album, on which she demonstrates an impressive level of ambition, and throws her hat into the ring as a candidate for the title of the ‘New Tom Waits’.
Like the earlier Regina Spektor albums, she can occasionally be accused of over-singing, but these songs, which merge folk, jazz and electro influences, can stand that.
Other lazy comparisons would probably include Joanna Newsome and Nina Nastasia, but I hope these can also be taken as a compliment. These songs are dynamic and frequently surprising, and while there is no standout moment, ’Afton’ is an enjoyable listen.
Here is the first offering of an artist on whose shoulders 4AD will doubtless be placing some considerable hope. For now, this makes for a rewarding twenty minute listen.
