Awesome Color - Electric Aborigines

Label: Ecstatic Peace
Format: CD
Sharp-sounding Stooges-influenced high energy rock on second album from New York trio Awesome Color

Review

Brooklyn trio Awesome Color made a splash in the world of high energy rock with their self-titled debut in 2006. Two years later they return with an even sharper bundle of rock. The thundering drums, leviathan bass and wind tunnel static that that backs the droning easternized riff on the opening track of ‘Electric Aborigines’ suggests a heavy White Panther party influence.: One suspects the title of their sophomore album pays tribute to Detroit rockers the Up’s 'Just Like an Aborigine'. Looming over all their influences are The Stooges. When singer Derek Stanton opens up, it removes all doubt that this was a trio raised on a steady diet of Iggy Pop. The band hasn’t changed the recipe much since their equally entertaining debut: Allison Busch pummels her kit, bassist Michael Troutman provides some heavy, charging bass and Stanton provides his lusty croon (also somewhat similar to Scream/Goatsnake frontman Pete Stahl’s), deceptively simple, jabbing electric leads and Sabbath-influenced riff work. There are a few extra flavours to ‘Electric Aborigines’, such as a touch of sitar decorating ‘Come And Dance’ and a little more variety to the guitar tunes. Any fan of the Stooges, or their numerous descendants – the Psyclone Rangers, to name but one link – should check out ‘Electric Aborigines’.
