Gritty, but upbeat fusion of dance beats, break beats, hip hop and alternative rock on immensely appealing second album from the London-based Atomic Hooligan
Review
London-based Atomic Hooligan return to the scene with the follow up to their critically acclaimed debut release ‘You are Here’. The Hooligans made a name for themselves with their particular fusion of dance beats, break beats, hip hop and alternative rock. They write scathing yet up-tempo tunes about the world around them. I would describe them as an upbeat version of the Prodigy as their dark edge is a lot more subtle and rather than creating down, dark and dirty sounds they make tunes that beg for the sunshine.
‘Blah Blah Blah’ is a good song to sum up the attitude with which the Hooligans convey themselves. It is a tale of a model wannabe and the way in which she conducts herself. With a clear hint of British wit about them there’s nothing not to love about them – “If you’re so fucking rich, why can’t you buy me a drink ?” The attitude they convey on songs such as ‘Do Me In’ and ‘Weed’ remind me a little of the Happy Mondays, as they have a similar really gritty edge to their uplifting sounds.
‘Dirty’ is a sample drenched piece which opens the album well giving you a great mashed up feel of what is to come from the album. With no further hanging around ‘I Don’t Care’ comes crashing in, being the most upbeat and dancey number on the album as it speedily bounces along.
Break beats beats sit comfortably next to electronica, giving the Hooligans their unique sound. This album will raise their profile as they are set to light up various festivals, gigs and clubs over the summer.
