Enjoyable split single from Maps and M83, upon which they mix each other's songs
Review
‘To The Sky’ was Maps’ last single as well as being also their debut single which was released on very limited 10 inch vinyl.
On this, the M83 mix ,it sounds like it is being performed in a church with Maps’ frontman and founder James Chapman singing as if he is a choir. He is backed by a strong organ. At the three minute mark, drums join in and the mix develops a Nu-Gaze texture, while the original in contrast was influenced by My Bloody Valentine.
The other side is Maps version of M83's, ‘We Own the Sky’, which is more electronica flavoured, and has a very early 1980's new wave sound, James’ vocals recalling Steve Strange from Visage. As it moves on, it develops a rave style.
