Upbeat and quirky fifth solo album from Moldy Peaches' frontman Adam Green, who shows himself on this to have become one of this decade’s best and most sophisticated songwriters.
Review
Over the course of his solo career, Adam Green has become a formidable songwriter, boldly straddling genres and perfecting a writing style that brings Jonathan Richman, Leonard Cohen and Scott Walker into the 21st century. Having done, lo fi, string-augmented folk, upbeat rockabilly, flamboyant crooning, Doors-y stomps and art rock noise, he has now turned his attention to the rich history of Southern music on his fifth album, ‘Sixes and Sevens’.
Opening with the sunny ‘Happy Days’ pop of ‘Festival Song’, the album jumps through several different styles and arrangements over the course of its 20 tracks. First single ‘Morning After Midnight’ is a great upbeat soul song, while ‘You Get So Lucky’ sounds like it could have featured on a late 60's spaghetti western soundtrack.
'Getting Led' sounds like a Lou Reed ballad performed by Booker T and the MGs, which is followed by the quirky country folk of ‘Drowning Head First’. ‘Broadcast Beach’ captures Phil Spector's work at its best, flowing nicely into the late 60's folk pop of ‘It’s a Fine’.
The country/60's pop/soul angle suits Green’s baritone well, giving the album a slightly greater accessibility than the overblown (in a good way) ‘Jacket Full of Danger’. The filth has also been slowly working its way out of Green’s lyrics, and on ‘Sixes and Sevens’ it’s almost non-existent. For fans, who are used to a bit of blue from Green, this may be a slight disappointment, but it’s just another sure sign that Green has become one of this decade’s best and most sophisticated songwriters.
