Milburn - These are the Facts

Label: Mercury
Format: CD
Enjoyable second album from much acclaimed Sheffield-based indie pop act, Milburn

Review

'These Are the Facts' is the second album from Milburn, the Sheffield group that started their early career as a support band to the Arctic Monkeys. The band consists of two brothers Joe(vocals and bass) and Louis Carnall (vocals and guitar), Tom Rowley (lead guitar), and Joe Green (drums). 'Lo + Behold' opens the album. It has a scouse 60's feel, and as it speeds up its gets more jangly, sounding somewhere between the Coral and the La's. 'What Will You Do (When the Money Goes)' was the first single from the album and comes across vocally as a cross between the Monkeys' Alex Turner and Gerry Marden from Gerry and the Pacemakers. It is very beat driven with a fabulous guitar solo and added power from the drums and bass. 'Wolves at Bay' recalls Ocean Colour Scene, while 'Summertime' is jangly with a very 60's sound. 'Lucy Lovemenot' is a song full of Northern charm and is very much like the Coral, while 'Sinking Ships' is much slower, 50's in it sound and recalls both Richard Hawley and Lee Hazlewood. Its lead guitar has a lovely twangy feel to it. 'Cowboys and Indians' is just like the Monkeys in its pace and charm, while 'Count to Ten' has a spoken word narrative and is quite slow to start before eventually speeding up. 'Come Away with Me' is another beat-driven number, while 'Rubicon', which is like nothing else here, is an acoustic singer-songwriter type number with an air of mid era Beatles to it. 'Genius and the Tramp' closes the album. It is very twangy and very mid 60's, recalling again the Monkeys and the Coral. This is a very pleasing album indeed.
