Formualic nu-metal on new single from highly touted 30 Seconds to Mars, which is fronted by actor Jared Leto
Review
Despite 30 Seconds to Mars having formed in 1998 and releasing their first album in 2002, I had never heard of them until fairly recently and now their name is appearing everywhere. I suspect that if you watch MTV or read 'Kerrang' you'll have heard of them before I did. Given that they seem to be well liked I was hoping that I'd be pleasantly surprised, as I was when I saw AFI at Leeds Festival a few years back.
Singer Jared Leto is also an actor, and formed the band with his brother Shannon who plays drums. They are joined by lead guitarist Tomo Miličević and are currently between bassists. They are big on logos in red and black, but I then a lot of MTV bands are so I won't read too much into that.
This particular track, The Kill is a formulaic "metal with eyeliner" ballad, all strained vocals and power guitars. On the strength, or otherwise, of this single I'm convinced they are popular due to Jared Leto's good looks rather than being a great band, and I'd pretty much rate them alongside HIM. But they are doing well enough amongst the nu-metallers and emos not to need my approval.
