Enjoyable, humorous split vinyl only single from indie supergroup the New Royal Family and singer-songwriter Keith TOTP
Review
The latest release from the Filthy Little Angels label is a split 7" EP, consisting of two tracks each from new bands, the New Royal Family and Keith TOTP.
The New Royal Family are an indie supergroup which features members of the Boyfriends, Linus, Salad, and Spy 51 among others. Their track, 'Anyone Fancy a Chocolate Digestive ?' has an Iggy Pop 'Lust for Life' vibe to it and is as raw as punk back in 1976. It could have easily been recorded back then and sounds like it too. The track is very fast and furious while the sense of humour in the vocal from singer David Barnett sounds like that of the Soft Boys' Robyn Hitchcock partying hard with the Monty Python team. The next track by the band is 'The Cornflake Family', which again is fast and furious with a classic dubby punk bass line and has added to it Beatles like harmonies with a vocal style that is again reminiscent of Robyn Hitchcock.
Keith TOTP's first track is called 'I Hate Your Band' which has a raw home recorded style. Full of very clever observations, he sounds on it like a new wave Badly Drawn Boy. The second track is' Girl', which is heavy and almost prog like, and, sounding like a solo Lennon jamming with Neil Young, has the lyrics of a decent Oasis.
