First album in over four years and debut album on the Domino label from former Soft Machine vocalist and the increasingly less than prolific Robert Wyatt which proves itself to have been worth the long wait
Review
A good deal less than prolific, a new recording from Robert Wyatt is always to be welcomed. To hear his unique voice is pleasure enough, but his increasingly rare and thought provoking voice of reason in a world often teetering on the brink of madness deserves a far wider audience than it usually reaches.
‘Comicopera’ his latest album and his first in over four years, finds him newly domiciled at Domino Records, which ought to open a few more doors. Featuring 16 songs and divided into 3 acts - ‘Lost In Noise’, ‘The Here And The Now’ and ‘Away With The Fairies’, Wyatt’s trademark constituents - minimalist avant-garde jazz meets strangely alluring left-field pop and his wryly compassionate and subversive political lyrics an equally integral component, are all present. Challenging, inspiring, joyful, haunting and even downright puzzling, assisted by regular collaborators including wife Alfie Benge, Brian Eno and Paul Weller, ‘Comicopera’ proves yet again that however long it might take to materialise, a new Wyatt record is always going to be worth the wait.
