Impressive debut UK single from New York-based shoegazing group Asobi Seksu
Review
Waiting in the wings for three years since its initial release over in America ‘Walk on the Moon’ is finally finding an outlet in the United Kingdom. By signing up with One Little Indian Records, Asobi Seksu have finally been given the chance to issue both their eponymous debut and superior ‘Citrus’ albums over in this country for the first time; heralding the arrival of one of New York’s most illusive bands.
Asobi Seksu have played together since 2003 and, comprising of vocalist Yuki, James Hanna and Glen Waldman on guitars and drummer Keith Hopkin, create swirling, textured dream pop of the highest calibre. Whilst drawing heavily from the sources that once nourished My Bloody Valentine the sound of Asobi Seksu is more direct, focused and filtered; seeking to enchant and inspire the listener. ‘Walk on the Moon’ is true to type in this regard; guitars quickly build to honey dripping saturation point, the rhythm section propels the track skywards and Yuki adds the icing on the cake with a delicious yet melancholic vocal melody. Yuki, who sings in both Japanese and English, is the star attraction of the band, bringing a slightly dark edge with her tender, nostalgic vocals, and providing a dramatic counter point to the absorbing, shimmering guitars.
Asobi Seksu could be the surprise hit of the summer. Their blend of euphoria and disenchantment, comparable to Blonde Redhead or Cibo Matto, is totally suited to those long evenings and late nights ahead and will provide a riveting soundtrack whatever the occasion.
